My sister was a Big to a Little for a number of years. These are the terms Big Brothers, Big Sisters, the non-profit child mentoring organization uses to describe adults who volunteer to mentor children who have been registered by their families as needing another adult in their lives. Once a week on her lunch hour during the school year, my sister would visit her Little at his school and have lunch with him. They would talk about his school and family and whatever a grade school student wants to talk about. Her Little was one of four kids to a single mom and his mom felt he needed another adult in his life. The mentoring program is set up so that the Little’s teacher can visit with my sister if the Little is lacking basic necessities throughout the school year. My sister helped her Little get glasses, and provided him with shoes, socks, underwear and a winter coat. My sister has a heart so big, she could mentor 10 Littles, but instead, Bigs mentor one Little at a time. If you are looking for a way to give back to your community, contact your local Big Brothers, Big Sisters organization and mentor a Little.
